Spiritual Discipline #2: SILENCE
What Is The Discipline Of Silence?
Last month, we saw that through the discipline of solitude, we take time to step back from people, the media, and other interactions in order to be alone with God. Through the closely related discipline of silence, we allow ourselves to withdraw from the sounds and noises normally around us in order to better hear from God. As attractive as this sounds, however, it can be a difficult discipline to develop. So dependant have we become upon the continuous presence of sound, that true silence can quickly leave us feeling uncomfortable and on edge. Yet it is in moments of silence that we fully hear the voice of God, a voice that most often comes not in the noise of a blowing wind or roaring fire, but in a gentle whisper.
How Do I Begin?
| • Select a time and place where you can be alone in silence. This could possibly take place for a brief period in the evening after everyone has gone to bed, or early in the morning before everyone rises. |
| • During each time alone and in quiet, slowly read through Isaiah 9:1-7 three times, concentrating on the words, listening to what God might be saying to you through them. |
